Activity Overview
This case-based activity is designed to outline effective management strategies for patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Optimizing HCV patient outcome requires a thorough understanding of the underlying patient and disease factors that influence treatment. Clinical scenarios are presented, and through the use of case studies, faculty review and discuss current data to illustrate treatment decisions.

Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians and other health care professionals involved in the care of patients with chronic hepatitis C.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
  • Identify HCV patients who may benefit from extended or truncated pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN) + ribavirin (RBV) treatment based on genotype, ethnicity, viral load, and the rapidity of viral clearance
  • Describe the clinical relevance of rapid virologic response (RVR), early virologic response (EVR), and sustained virologic response (SVR) with respect to treatment duration and treatment goals
  • Describe the influence of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and steatosis on HCV disease progression and treatment outcome
  • Formulate an appropriate treatment strategy for HCV patients who are obese
