Nezam H. Afdhal, MD

Nezam H. Afdhal received a medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He completed an internship and residency at St. Laurence's Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. He also completed a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at St. Vincent's Hospital in Dublin, as well as clinical and research fellowships in gastroenterology at Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dr. Afdhal holds memberships in several professional societies, including the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology. He is the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship and serves as Director of the US-Egypt Fulbright Program in HCV.
Dr. Afdhal has published extensively in the areas of liver disease mechanisms, liver fibrosis, and cirrhosis related to chronic HCV infection. He is editor of Gallbladder and Biliary Tract Diseases and the section editor for "Gastrointestinal Disorders" in Primary Care Medicine, 3rd edition. He currently serves as an ad hoc reviewer for a number of journals, including Gastroenterology, Hepatology, New England Journal of Medicine, and Annals of Internal Medicine.

Thomas Berg received a medical degree from the University of Tübingen in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. His postdoctoral training included research associateships in the University Clinic Rudolf Virchow Department of Haematology/Oncology Clinic in Berlin; in the University Clinic Charité, Campus Virchow-Klinikum Hepatology/Gastroenterology Clinic; and in the Liver Consultation of Charité University Clinic, Campus Virchow-Klinikum. He also served in the Internal-Hepatologic Medical Care of Liver Transplantation Programme at Charité, Campus Virchow-Klinikum under Dr. Peter Neuhaus. Dr. Berg currently serves as Associate Professor in the Charité, Campus Virchow-Clinic Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at University Medicine Berlin. He is also Head of both the Liver Outpatient Clinic and the Laboratory for Molecular Hepatitis Virus Diagnostics.
A specialist in internal medicine, Dr. Berg holds membership in the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). Dr. Berg’s research activities include participation on national and international clinical studies in chronic viral hepatitis therapy and management of antiviral drug resistance within the European surveillance network for vigilance against viral resistance (VIRGIL). Dr. Berg is well published in the peer-reviewed literature and has written numerous papers and book chapters

Kimberly A. Brown, MD

Kimberly A. Brown completed a medical degree at Wayne State Medical School in Detroit, Michigan. She completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, where she also completed a fellowship in gastroenterology. Current appointments held by Dr. Brown include Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
Board certified in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology, Dr. Brown holds membership in several professional societies, including the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, American Society of Transplantation, American Gastroenterology Association, and the American College of Gastroenterology. She currently serves as a referee for Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Transplantation, and Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology. Dr. Brown is Past Secretary of the Michigan Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and currently serves on the American Board of Internal Medicine Transplant Hepatology Board and the Board of the American Society of Transplantation.
Dr. Brown is well published in the areas of liver transplantation and complications of liver transplantation related to chronic hepatitis C viral infection. She has contributed to several publications and she is past section editor for "Biliary Tract, Abdominal Cavity/Miscellaneous" in Textbook of Gastroenterology: Self-Assessment Review. Dr. Brown’s clinical interests include viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver failure, liver cancer, liver transplantation, variceal bleeding, and ascites.

John G. McHutchison, MD

John G. McHutchison earned a medical degree at the University of Melbourne, Australia, and completed his internship, residency, and gastroenterology fellowship at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia. He completed an advanced fellowship in hepatology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
Board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, Dr. McHutchison holds membership in the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD). Additionally, Dr. McHutchison is a member of several advisory committees, including the AGA Research Policy Committee, the AASLD NIH Liaison Committee, and the AASLD Clinical Research Committee, for which he serves as Chairman. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
Dr. McHutchison has published worldwide on the topic of liver diseases and has authored numerous articles and book chapters on chronic hepatitis C infection. He serves on the editorial boards for several publications, including Hepatology, Hepatitis–Index & Reviews, and Hepatology Reviews. He is a reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, Gastroenterology, Journal of Infectious Diseases, American Journal of Gastroenterology, and several other journals. Dr. McHutchison serves as Associate Editor for Journal of Hepatology. His clinical interests include hepatitis B and C, ascites, noninvasive fibrosis markers, and steatosis; his research interests include chronic viral hepatitis, immunopathogenesis, predictive biomarkers, and translational research initiatives.

Mitchell L. Shiffman, MD

Mitchell L. Shiffman received a medical degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. His postdoctoral training included an internal medicine internship and residency at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond, a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Training Grant in Liver and Digestive Diseases (under Dr. Edward W. Moore) at Virginia Commonwealth University, and a clinical fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at Medical College of Virginia Hospitals. At the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, Dr. Shiffman currently serves as Chief of the Hepatology Section in the Division of Gastroenterology, Medical Director of the Liver Transplantation Program, Professor in the Department of Medicine, and Associate Chair for Clinical Practice.
Board certified in gastroenterology and hepatology, and internal medicine, Dr. Shiffman is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), the American College of Physicians, the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for the Study of Liver Diseases, and the International Liver Transplantation Society. Additionally, he is a member of the ACG Board of Trustees and Research Institute Executive Committee.
Dr. Shiffman has published over 450 articles and abstracts in the peer-reviewed literature and is a reviewer for several journals. He has written numerous book chapters and review articles, and he is Editor for two textbooks, Hepatology: A Practical Approach (2004) and Curbside Consultation of the Liver (2008). Dr. Shiffman’s research endeavors include several phase 2 and 3 clinical trials and large investigator-initiated clinical trials on chronic viral hepatitis B and C, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and liver transplantation. He has served on several NIH grant review committees.
