Stephen B. Hanauer, MD

Stephen B. Hanauer completed a medical degree, with honors, at the University of Illinois in Chicago. His postdoctoral training included an internship and residency in internal medicine, as well as a fellowship in gastroenterology, at The University of Chicago. In addition to his positions at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, Dr. Hanauer also serves as Director of the Logan Center for Gastrointestinal Research and Co-Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research Center at The University of Chicago.

Dr. Hanauer is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Gastroenterology, respectively. He holds membership in several professional societies and is a Fellow of both the American College of Gastroenterology and the American College of Physicians. His involvement at The University of Chicago includes serving on numerous committees. In connection with the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), Dr. Hanauer served as chair for the Inflammation, Immunology, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Section, subsequently also serving as Councilor for Clinical Research on the governing board and as chair of the Clinical Practice Section. Among his many honors, Dr. Hanauer received the AGA Fiterman Foundation Joseph B. Kirsner Award in Gastroenterology in 2001 and the Janssen Award for Clinical Excellence in 2004.

Dr. Hanauer has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed journal articles, books and book chapters, abstracts, monographs, and editorials. He also designed and maintains a 6,000-patient database for the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Registry. Dr. Hanauer is Editor-in-Chief of Nature Clinical Practice Gastroenterology & Hepatology and serves on the editorial boards of numerous journals, including the American Journal of Gastroenterology, American Journal of Medicine, and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. He is the outgoing chairman of the International Organization for Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Brian G. Feagan, MD

Brian G. Feagan completed a medical degree at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada. His postdoctoral training included an internship and residency in the Department of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario and (as Chief Resident) in the Department of Medicine at the London Health Sciences Centre, and a clinical fellowship in the University of Western Ontario Division of Gastroenterology.

Board certified in internal medicine and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Dr. Feagan holds membership in the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG), the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC). Additionally, Dr. Feagan is a member of the CCFC’s Clinical Fellowship Review and Scientific Research Committees, as well as the CCFC’s Medical Advisory Board. He is also a Reviewer for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research National Health Research & Development Program of Health & Welfare Canada. Among Dr. Feagan’s many awards are the University of Western Ontario Dean’s Award of Excellence, Medicine & Dentistry (2003); the CAG Visiting Research Professor Award (2005); and the University of Western Ontario Faculty Scholar Award in Medicine & Dentistry (2007).

Dr. Feagan is well published in the peer-reviewed literature and he is a reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine, Gastroenterology, the American Journal of Gastroenterology, and several other journals. He has authored several book chapters and served as Editor for several books, including Evidence-Based Gastroenterology and Hepatology (2004). Dr. Feagan’s research efforts focus on the design and implementation of randomized controlled trials of therapy for inflammatory bowel disease, and he has been the principal investigator on several funded trials. Dr. Feagan is a highly sought speaker on topics relating to the management of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

Daniel H. Present, MD

Daniel H. Present received a medical degree from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. His postgraduate training included residencies in gastroenterology and internal medicine at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York. In addition to his position with Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Dr. Present currently serves as an attending physician at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

Board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine, Dr. Present is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Gastroenterological Association and the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG). His numerous professional achievements include serving on the National Scientific Advisory Board and chairing the Patient Education Committee of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. Additionally, Dr. Present is a founder of the Foundation for Clinical Research in Inflammatory Bowel Disease with an Endowed Clinical Research Fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Among Dr. Present’s many awards are the Master of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterology Association’s Distinguished Clinician Award, and the William Dock Master Teaching Award from the State University of New York. He is also a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America.

Dr. Present has published more than 150 scientific articles and abstracts on inflammatory bowel disease and its treatment. He co-edited two books and produced several educational videotapes on inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Present also serves as a reviewer for articles on inflammatory bowel disease in several major medical journals, including Gastroenterology, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Gut, and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. He is a past editor for the controversy section of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. Dr. Present is a privately practicing gastroenterologist who has been conducting clinical research in his office for over 30 years.

William J. Sandborn, MD

William J. Sandborn received a medical degree and completed a residency in internal medicine at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. His postdoctoral training also included a gastroenterology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In addition to his positions as professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Vice Chairman of the Mayo Clinic Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Dr. Sandborn currently serves as the Associate Director of Research at the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Foundation.

Board certified in gastroenterology, Dr. Sandborn holds membership in several professional societies, including the American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology, and the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America. Additionally, he is the Chair of the Immunology, Microbiology and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Section of the American Gastroenterological Association and Chairman of the International Organization of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Among his many honors, Dr. Sandborn was elected to the International Organization for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Dr. Sandborn is a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association Institute, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Sandborn has published over 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Gut. Dr. Sandborn's research interests are clinical trials and clinical pharmacology related to inflammatory bowel disease. He is the principal investigator on several clinical studies focusing on the management of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
