Activity Overview
The prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) increases in men over the age of 40. Urinary symptoms of both bladder and prostate origin are among the hallmarks of LUTS. This program discusses in detail the bladder- and prostate-related etiology of LUTS. It also discusses the use of 5-α-reductase inhibitors, phosphodiesterase inhibitors, and antimuscarinic agents. The remaining focus of the activity is on individualizing treatment of LUTS.

Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of urologists and other health care professionals who treat male patients with LUTS.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Explain the prostate and bladder origin of male LUTS and differentiate symptoms suggestive of each condition
  • Identify overlapping issues associated with male LUTS and sexual dysfunction
  • Formulate an appropriate management strategy for male patients with LUTS
  • Determine which male LUTS patients are candidates for antimuscarinic treatment
