Joel B. Nelson, MD

Joel B. Nelson completed a medical degree at Northwestern University. Following surgical and urological residencies at the McGraw Medical Center of Northwestern University and a fellowship at the Brady Urological Institute, Dr. Nelson served as an assistant professor of urology and oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Director of Urologic Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

A Diplomate of the American Board of Urology, Dr. Nelson holds membership in several professional societies, including the American Urological Association (AUA), the American Association for Cancer Research, the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons. He is the recipient of numerous honors; in 2009, Dr. Nelson received a Certificate of Appreciation from the AUA Resident Committee for Resident Teaching and a Resident Teaching Award from the University of Pittsburgh Department of Urology. Additionally, he appeared on several top doctors lists and was elected to membership in the Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons.

Dr. Nelson is on the Board of Consulting Editors for the scientific journal Urology and is an ad hoc reviewer for numerous other medical publications, including The New England Journal of Medicine. His clinical interests include prostate cancer and other urinary tract malignancies, and he is one of the country's leading surgeons performing nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy. Dr. Nelson’s research focuses on new ways to treat advanced prostate cancer that no longer responds to hormone therapy.
