James N. George, MD—Co-Chair

James N. George earned a medical degree at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He completed an internship and residency in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, as well as a residency in medicine and a fellowship in hematology at Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester School of Medicine in Rochester, New York.

Board certified in internal medicine and hematology, Dr. George is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and holds membership in several professional organizations, including the American Federation for Clinical Research and the American Society of Clinical Investigation. He is Past President of the American Society of Hematology. Among his many awards, Dr. George has received the Tibor Greenwalt Career Research Award from the American Association of Blood Banks (2003) and the Investigator Recognition Award for Contributions to Hemostasis from the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (2005).

Dr. George has authored a number of articles, editorials, and book chapters and is a member of the editorial boards of TheScientificWorldJOURNAL and Blood Cells, Molecules, & Diseases. Dr. George's research interests include idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.


David J. Kuter, MD, DPhil—Co-Chair

David J. Kuter earned a research doctorate (DPhil) at Magdalen College of Oxford University and a medical degree at Harvard Medical School. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, clinical and research fellowships in medicine at Harvard Medical School, and a fellowship in hematology-oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He also completed a visiting scientist and postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. Dr. Kuter holds appointments as Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Associate Professor of Health Sciences and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology, Dr. Kuter chairs the Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia Subcommittee of the National Institutes of Health Network for Transfusion Medicine and Hemostasis. He is also a member of the International Society for Experimental Hematology.

Dr. Kuter is active in training hematology/oncology fellows, developing curricula, organizing and giving lectures, and supervising rounds. He has authored numerous articles, reviews, chapters, books, editorials, and clinical communications. Additionally, he serves as a reviewer for Blood, New England Journal of Medicine, and Transfusion. Dr. Kuter has dedicated years of effort to researching coagulopathies, anticoagulation, and platelet disorders. In recent years, Dr. Kuter has conducted groundbreaking research into the development of effective thrombopoietic agents.


Victor S. Blanchette, MD, FRCP

Victor Blanchette received his medical degree from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. He completed a residency in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and a fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at McMaster University Medical Centre in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. At The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Dr. Blanchette currently serves as Chief of the Division of Haematology/Oncology, Senior Associate Scientist, and Medical Director for the Comprehensive Care Hemophilia and Paediatric Hemostasis Programs. He is the Women's Auxiliary Millennium Chair in Paediatric Haematology/Oncology.

A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in both Canada and the United Kingdom, Dr. Blanchette holds prominent positions in several organizations. He is the Chair of both the Council of Canadian Paediatric Haematology/Oncology Directors Group and the Canadian Paediatric Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network, and a member on the Boards of the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO), Camp Oochigeas, Camp Trillium, and the Childhood Cancer Foundation Candlelighters Canada.

In addition to being a frequent invited speaker and lecturer, Dr. Blanchette has been an investigator for clinical studies, has authored several books and book chapters, and has published articles in New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Pediatrics, American Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Haemophilia, and many other peer-reviewed journals. His research interests are the congenital and acquired bleeding disorders of children.


Eva Hellström-Lindberg, MD, PhD

Eva Hellström-Lindberg received a medical degree and a doctorate from Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, and completed specialist training in hematology. In addition to her position as Associate Professor in the Division of Hematology, Dr. Hellström-Lindberg serves as Vice Chair and Chair for Research Education in the Department of Medicine at Karolinska Institutet.

Dr. Hellström-Lindberg holds positions of prominence in several professional organizations. She currently serves as President for the Nordic MDS Research Group and is Past President of the European Hematology Association (EHA). Additionally, she holds a first level Senior Research Position with the Swedish Cancer Society and is a member of the Research Board of the Swedish Cancer Foundation.

In addition to being a frequent invited speaker and lecturer, Dr. Hellström-Lindberg has been active in clinical studies of myelodysplastic syndromes, with special focus on erythroid apoptosis, growth factors, and the role of DNA methylation. She has authored articles in British Journal of Haematology, Blood, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, Haematologica, Clinical Cancer Research, and many other peer-reviewed journals.
