Activity Overview
Given the constantly changing landscape of ulcerative colitis (UC) management, it is essential that clinicians be aware of the continually evolving data and controversies in this area so as to provide optimal care for patients with this lifelong, potentially debilitating disease. This activity is designed to highlight current issues in the treatment of UC.

Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of gastroenterologists and other health care providers involved in the care of patients with UC.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
  • Define the American College of Gastroenterology Practice Guidelines as they relate to the goal of effective management of UC
  • Discuss factors to consider when classifying disease severity and identify optimal treatment strategies for patients with mild or moderate UC
  • Discuss the role of 5-aminosalicylic acid in the treatment of patients who require biologic or immunomodulator therapy
  • Compare the concept of “bottom-up” vs “top-down” treatment as it relates to UC and discuss the evidence and issues regarding each strategy
  • Relate the potential risks of intensive therapy vs the potential risks of colectomy for patients with severe UC
  • Design therapeutic strategies to optimize the use of therapies for the management of mild, moderate, or severe UC, for both induction of remission and maintenance and to reduce the risk of complications for patients with UC
